A retrospective on my first day of college (aka, what happened yesterday)

Today was the second day of class, but let me back up and tell you a little bit about my first day of college classes.

First class of the day was my wonderful honor chemistry class. Now I’m not one of those science eschewing people. I like sciences, in fact I may go so far as to say I love them. I’m even considering a double major in one. I did well in all of my science classes in high school, but I wouldn’t say that any of them were exactly challenging. I was offered the choice of taking honors chemistry or western civilizations. In my mind, chemistry is a much more interesting option than history, plus honors section means fewer students. So yeah, I signed up without any worries.

Dr. E. stands up in front of class and begins his syllabi explanation. I was prepared to be daunted, I mean, this isn’t building things in the sand pile at home any more, kids; this is the big leagues (you know, like using paint instead of crayons or something like that).  What I was not prepared for was for him to say that we were going to cover an entire year of chemistry in a semester. After I had a heart attack (I’m an anxious person, it happens), I recovered myself to also catch that we will be getting to do research for the second half of the semester in lab. Basically my opinion of the class goes like this: I’m pretty sure I’m not ready, but what the fuck, how can I pass up research? I’ll take a C if it means I get to play in the lab.

Okay, so that was a pretty boring part of the day. I mean, when you stress out as much as I do, you find such experiences pretty dull regardless of the amount of adrenaline that starts to run. After lunch were my more interesting classes.

First off Greek (and a wee bit of Roman) mythology. There I sat in the class room with all the other students, and it is 10 minutes past the time class was suppose to start. Finally one of the upper classmen went and tracked down our prof. First reaction I had as she walked through the door was, “Just too cute!” Seriously, Dr. W is fun, energetic, playful, and simply put one of my favorite profs for now. She explained how until someone came to get her, she had been sitting in her office thinking, “What am I going to do for another hour? I’m so bored…” Poor dear, it’s her first year at this college and she’s sick; she completely lost track of her schedule. We spent what time we had left in her class looking over the schedule and talking about various subjects including the modern “prince-charming” problem for women. I’m looking forward to the discussion in her class because she seems focused on drawing connections from ancient mythology into the ways we mythologize in life today.

Last class for the day: Critical Thinking (let me here a “hell yeah” from all the other philosophy majors out there! What? No one???). This class was the one I was most excited for from since I registered for classes and I don’t think it will disappoint. Now before I give you all the reasons for my love of critical thinking class, I will point out its flaws. This class is not only a required course for my major, but also the only other option for those students who do not want to take a communications class or did not place out of communications. This means lots of uninterested, not engaged students are sitting next to me in class. It is also taught in a tiny room full of these uninterested and unengaged students. At any rate, I’m the only philosophy major in it as far as I know.

Now moving on to the high points: the prof obviously knows his stuff and enjoys the subject; there are no speeches, papers, or essays; I love the subject; and, if you didn’t catch this yet, as a class in LOGIC one should be okay in assuming it should be fairly LOGICAL.

Anywho, more exciting, interesting things happened today, but I’ve still got have of the Theogony of Hesiod to read before tomorrow and I want to finish before supper. Hope you enjoyed the small update in my life. Don’t worry, I’ll write when everything gets super difficult and I feel like giving up.
